Waiting Well

So. MUCH. of motherhood requires waiting and being patient.

We wait to become pregnant.

We wait 9-ish months to hold our baby(ies).

We wait for milk to come in for breastfeeding.

We wait for our bodies to heal postpartum.

We wait (and long!!!) for the day our babies will sleep through the night.

We wait and look forward to the day our children are toilet-trained and can take themselves to the potty.

We wait for the seeds (of good character, habits, behavior, etc.) we plant on a DAILY basis to sprout and grow and show fruit.

We wait for them to be ready to take on bigger responsibilities.

We wait for the day they won’t need so much discipline.

We wait. And wait. And wait. And wait some more. For so many things.

Waiting is a HUGE part of being a mom. And we’re not always good at it. In fact, I’d hazard a guess that most of us started out horribly and are learning how to wait as we mother our children.

And that’s okay. It’s all part of the journey and growing up process for our children and for us.

Don’t despair or lose hope in the waiting. There are things to do in the waiting room of wherever you are in motherhood.

“Wait for the Lord; be strong and courageous. Wait for the Lord.”

Psalms 27:14 HCSB

“Here’s what I’ve learned through it all: Don’t give up; don’t be impatient; be entwined as one with the Lord. Be brave and courageous, and never lose hope. Yes, keep on waiting—for he will never disappoint you!”

Psalms 27:14 TPT

In the original Hebrew, according to Strong’s Concordance, one of the meanings of “wait” is “to bind together (perhaps by {twisting}).””

I heard a pastor describe it once as the making of a rope. You have to sit and wait for the rope to form, but you are actively twisting the fibers together and will eventually end up with a finished rope. It takes a lot of patience! And waiting.

In the waiting, keep trusting.

In the waiting, keep your ear to God’s heartbeat and keep doing whatever He’s showing you to do.

This journey is done with Him, not for Him.

We will get stretched and grown ourselves, along the way, for we are not yet done maturing, either. If this is a frustrating process, take heart! God has a beautiful promise for you and for me:

“And I am convinced and sure of this very thing, that He Who began a good work in you will continue until the day of Jesus Christ [right up to the time of His return], developing [that good work] and perfecting and bringing it to full completion in you.”

Philippians 1:6 AMPC

And finally, a wonderful promise for those who are waiting…

“but they that *wait (emphasis mine) upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

Isaiah 40:31 KJV

*fun fact…the word “wait” in this verse is the exact same Hebrew word I pointed out in Psalm 27:14, meaning “to bind together, to twist.”

All in all, waiting is not easy, but it is very important. Let Jesus into your waiting, ask Him to help you see the point of it all and to give you a vision for the future. He delights in you and loves you SO much!

It will be okay. And, in the waiting, know that you are creating something so much bigger than yourself and so much more beautiful than you can imagine. God does the best work!

“So now wrap your heart tightly around the hope that lives within us, knowing that God always keeps his promises!”

Hebrews 10:23 TPT

Blessings and love,
